Dear Friend,
Today offers an opportunity to reflect on the true history of the land we call home and the Indigenous peoples who have stewarded it for generations. The story of this land is one of resilience and survival in the face of colonization and displacement, and we honor those who continue to carry their cultures, histories, and communities forward.
In Maryland, we recognize the Accohannock, Assateague, Nause-Waiwash, Piscataway Conoy, Piscataway Indian Nation, Pocomoke, and Youghiogheny River Band of Shawnee as original stewards of these lands. Their contributions, past and present, shape the foundations of our state and remind us of our shared responsibility to advocate for justice.
At Progressive Maryland, we are committed to taking action beyond acknowledgment. Every year, we deepen our support for Indigenous-led efforts by contributing directly to the Cedarville Band of Piscataway Indians and continuing to push for policies that respect Indigenous rights and advance equity.
As you reflect today, we invite you to join us in taking steps toward justice. Learn more about the history of the land you live on, support Indigenous organizations, and amplify Indigenous voices in your community. Together, we can honor their resilience with meaningful action.
Sincerely,
The Progressive Maryland Team
