Dear friend,
I cannot let the holiday of Thanksgiving pass without expressing my gratitude to you. An organization devoted to animals operates only because there exists, in our nation, a community of people who care about the urgent work of preventing cruelty and helping animals in need.
You read our emails. You donate. You use our online tools to alert lawmakers and corporations to their responsibilities to animals. You lead and live by example.
There are many important issues in our society, but it’s my belief that the humane treatment of animals is one of the most important. There are billions of animals at risk, and every one of their lives matters to them — and their lives should matter to us, too. Whether they are pets or animals raised on factory farms. Whether they are wild animals in Colorado or Wyoming, or in South Africa or Australia. Whether they are used in invasive experiments in labs or shot in the Outback to make athletic shoes.
How we treat animals is a test of our character as individuals and as a society. And we know that where there is violence against animals, other threats lurk in the hearts of the people who seem to have misplaced or lost their capacity for empathy.
Thanks to your support this year, we have made meaningful progress to protect farm animals from extreme confinement, further curtailed the trade in kangaroo skins, made progress on ending pharmaceuticals testing on beagles and other animals, and taken on trophy hunting, animal fighting, and other disgraceful activities.
Soon, we’ll be reaching out about Giving Tuesday and asking for your help as we enter the critical year-end giving period. It’s the time of the year when we close out our reform efforts and plan for campaigns in the new year. We are responsible custodians of your support, and we work hard to drive major change.
But for now, know how thankful we are that you are on our team, that you have linked arms with us as we press the case for a more humane world for animals in government and in business. All of us hope that all of you have a warm, loving, and enjoyable holiday.
Sincerely,
Wayne Pacelle [[link removed]] Wayne Pacelle
