Dear John,
The House just passed a bill that could cripple nonprofits standing up for justice, transparency, and equality. Under the misleading name Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act (H.R. 9495) this legislation is a far-right Trojan horse designed to dismantle nonprofit organizations that challenge their agenda.
If passed, it would give Trump’s Treasury Secretary, or any future partisan official, the power to strip nonprofits of their tax-exempt status by labeling them "terrorist-affiliated."
There would be no due process, no oversight. The accusation alone could destroy an organization’s reputation, sever ties with donors, and isolate them from critical infrastructure like banks.
Advocacy groups protecting voting rights, the environment, and marginalized communities would be wiped out with the stroke of a pen. Nonprofits are a cornerstone of democracy, providing accountability and amplifying the voices of everyday Americans.
The Senate is our last line of defense. Tell Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to block this legislation before it ever reaches President Biden’s desk.
This bill is a calculated move to stifle resistance against injustice. By targeting tax-exempt organizations, it threatens to undo decades of progress in civil rights, environmental protection, and social equity.
If this bill gains traction in the Senate, advocacy groups, those who dare to challenge the entrenched systems of power, will be silenced.
Imagine a future where organizations fighting for your rights are branded as enemies of the state. That’s the reality H.R. 9495 seeks to create.
We can’t let this happen. The Senate must hear from Americans who believe in the power of nonprofits to hold the powerful accountable.
Stand up for advocacy, for democracy, for justice. Tell Senator Schumer to stop this bill dead in its tracks.
Together, we can defend the organizations that protect us.
