Dear John,
During this time of gratitude and togetherness, I wanted to take a moment to recognize you and to say thank you for all you do. Your generosity has made a difference for families around the world who are facing crisis and who long for safety, a warm meal and a place to call home.
Thank you for bringing warmth and hope to families in need. Your generosity reflects the spirit of this season.
While we gather with loved ones tomorrow, many refugee and displaced families are just beginning to rebuild their lives in a new community.
Taghreed, who came to the U.S. as a refugee from Iraq, shares her journey to create a home filled with warmth and tradition. One way she does this is by making Shakarlama, a sweet and aromatic cookie that fills her home with the smell of cardamom—a comforting reminder of her childhood.
"I called my mum and got the recipe for Shakarlama. I wanted that cardamom smell to fill my new home and fill my heart. I wanted new memories with my children in a place where we feel happy and safe. I can't explain how happy I was that first night I made them in the U.S."
As a special thank you, we're sharing Taghreed's treasured Shakarlama cookie recipe with you (only 4 ingredients!). We hope it brings a bit of the warmth and joy that you bring to refugee families like Taghreed's. >>

Taghreed moved to the U.S. in 2013 as a refugee, after fleeing extremists in Iraq. Since arriving, she's made Seattle her home and wants her children to have similar warm memories of a house filled with the sweet smell of baking.
