INSTITUTE NEWS: Giving thanks for our community for change

Dear friends,

As we face another dangerous moment in the South and country, with a new wave of threats to freedom and democracy in store, I’d like to thank you for your support and being part of our community for change.

In the South, we know a few things about fighting back in the face of attacks on democracy and equality. For more than five decades, the Institute for Southern Studies has exposed abuses of power and offered a strong voice for change — part of a longer, unbroken history of Southern movements for freedom and justice.

In the coming months and years, the Institute’s voice and resources will be even more critical. Our team has been conducting in-depth planning this year to strengthen our focus and impact, and we’re excited to share our refreshed strategy in early 2025.

In light of the recent elections, we feel an even greater sense of urgency to ensure our work meets the moment to defend marginalized Southern communities and build momentum for a progressive future.

As we head into the holiday season, we are thankful for all of you who have supported the Institute and joined in our mission to create a more just and democratic future in the South.

Keep your eyes on the prize.

Chris Kromm, Executive Director and Publisher
