A googol Google updates
It’s been a hectic few weeks in Google-land, so let’s catch up!
Google remedies: Last week, the Department of Justice dropped its proposed remedies after Google was found to have an illegal monopoly on search and search text ads. Among the proposals is forcing Google to sell off Chrome.
That other Google monopoly trial: Closing arguments were held Monday on whether Google has an illegal monopoly in the digital advertising industry, and Arielle was there to give us a recap.
Per our previous investigation request:The NYT ran a great story on how “Google systematically told employees to destroy messages, avoid certain words and copy the lawyers as often as possible.” If that sounds familiar, it’s because it’s the exact behavior for which we urged the State Bar of California to investigate Kent Walker, Google’s President of Global Affairs.
And now a word from our sponsors
Like cute clothes AND making sure advertiser dollars support legitimate websites and facts instead of AI spam and clickbait? You can now support us through our brand new merch store! As a dad, I can confirm that’s a hat a dad would wear.
Who’s down with FTC?
The FTC has kinda been on one when it comes to adtech, thanks to its chair Lina Kahn. Arielle Garcia spoke to Marketing Brew about how the last few years of FTC enforcement have served as a wake-up call to the ad industry around its widespread collection and sale of location data.
And considering that Wired article above on how this data is putting service members and US security at risk, we don't see this issue going away any time soon.
That’s all for this week. If you’re in the US, have a great, long weekend! If you’re not, enjoy the peace and quiet while your US coworkers take a long weekend!
