John — whether Thanksgiving is a time of gathering, reflection, or simply enjoying a good meal, it’s worth taking a moment to consider this: Climate change is quietly threatening the ingredients and traditions that bring so many of us together every year.

Imagine a Thanksgiving without sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, or even stuffing. Experts say that rising temperatures and extreme weather are already causing harvests of these staples to shrink, making them scarcer and more expensive.

Climate Crisis at the Thanksgiving Table. Turkey: Extreme heat and weather are stressing turkeys, reducing birth rates and driving up prices. Cranberries: By 2070, cranberry harvests are expected to decrease by 5%, and the quality will also decline due to rising temperatures and extreme weather. Sweet Potatoes: In Mississippi, sweet potato yields could drop by 18% by 2060, with similar losses in North Carolina shortly after. Wheat: In 2021, droughts caused a 10% drop in U.S. wheat production, making it harder to produce bread and stuffing. Source: ABC News

We often hear about the catastrophic long-term impacts of the climate crisis – melting glaciers, rivers drying up, skyrocketing temperatures, and more. And let us be clear: the consequences of inaction go far beyond Thanksgiving dinner. But it’s also reshaping our traditions, making cultural touchstones like Thanksgiving harder to sustain.

That’s the bad news. The good news? Together, we can change course, to protect our planet and treasured moments like Thanksgiving from the deadly impacts of the climate crisis. Thanks to supporters like you, we have the opportunity to build the grassroots power we need to fight back.

Your dedication makes it possible to invest in climate solutions at every level — from local leaders fighting for resilient communities to bold national policies. That’s exactly what we do at the Jane Fonda Climate PAC.

This Thanksgiving, as you gather around the table, think about the future we want for our families and traditions. Then, take action with us. Together, we can push for the changes that ensure Thanksgiving remains a celebration of abundance, not scarcity.
