Hi John,
Yesterday, the UK's bathing waters received their annual classifications.
But the bathing water classification regime is inadequate, misleading and needs radical reform. It's laughable that the water quality of a site can be deemed 'Excellent' based on a sliver of testing during the bathing season. A regime with no testing in winter, and no testing of chemical pollutants, which allows the worst pollution events to be disregarded, is no good for public health. ❌🤢
The consultation to reform the regulations is vital and must deliver a year-round bathing season, with year-round testing. When it comes to designating bathing waters in the future, it should be on the basis that they're well-loved spots for dippers, paddlers, surfers or more – not on how expensive it will be to clean up pollution.
You can take action - respond to the consultation before the 23rd of December HERE [[link removed]]
Blue Friday with FInisterre
Finisterre has been with us since they started out in Cornwall 20 years ago. They've stood shoulder-to-shoulder with us at protests, amplified our messaging and fuelled our campaigns.
But their support doesn't stop there and we're proud to partner together to turn Black Friday Blue this weekend, where they'll be incentivising their gear with impact over short-term discounts. For every order in the UK and Europe, £2 will be donated to Surfers Against Sewage.

Global Plastics Treaty
The global plastics treaty is a chance for countries across the globe, including the UK to put the world on track to end plastic pollution. This negotiation is the fifth and final round where we expect countries to agree a collective plan to end plastic pollution.
