Dictators see independent media as an existential threat to their rule, so it’s no surprise that Belarus’s Alyaksandr Lukashenka wants to crush media freedom in his country. After stealing Belarus’s 2020 presidential election, Lukashenka forced many independent media organizations into exile.
Among them was Nasha Niva, Belarus’s oldest newspaper and a protector of the country’s unique language and culture. With their staff displaced and their website blocked, Nasha Niva has found new and innovative ways to speak truth to power inside their homeland.
