Dear friend,
I never remember the difference between a non-profit and a not-for-profit organization. (The Christian Century is a nonprofit, but I had to look it up!) All I know is that we don’t have billionaires like Elon Musk backing us or making money for us. The church and people who center their lives around God are probably not central to Musk’s daily thinking, spending, or giving. At least, that’s my guess.
But we have you who understands the value of what we do. I don’t think you’d be a reader of the Century if you weren’t interested in expanding your faith perspectives and your mind. And you probably wouldn’t ever need to donate if Tesla was an advertiser on our pages. As it is, however, we’re deeply reliant on donor support. Advertising and subscription revenue, no matter how aggressively we pursue either one, only make up 70 percent of our annual revenue. So, we need your help every year to fill the gap. Much like congregations I’ve served, the financial requirements for sustaining this publishing ministry are ever-present.
The good news of the moment, if you haven’t heard it, is that two friends of the Century have stepped forward this fall to amplify the power of what you can do. They are offering a $50,000 challenge match for every donation given before the end of the year. This means that all gifts received by December 31, 2024, will be matched dollar for dollar, up to the $50,000 challenge total.
This is huge. Hugely generous and hugely inspirational. But it’s only huge if you capitalize on it. Double the impact of your generosity right now. A $50 gift from you instantly becomes $100. A $500 gift suddenly becomes $1,000. This kind of doubling power is really significant to us.
So, please respond today! Open your heart and give freely to this match campaign if you haven’t already. Our vitality as an award-winning magazine depends on people who look exactly like you. You won’t regret making a difference for what you have come to trust as excellent religious journalism.
Thanks for taking this opportunity to be generous,
Peter W. Marty, Editor/Publisher
The Christian Century
P.S. Give today and help keep the Christian Century strong. If you’ve already given to this match, thank you very much!
