Did you see Max’s email from Friday? I wanted to make sure you saw it, because we need to raise the alarm now on President-elect Trump’s so-called “Department of Government Efficiency” that he wants billionaire Elon Musk to co-lead. Musk is proposing $2 trillion in cuts from the federal budget — which is more than the federal government spent on defense, education, veterans’ health, and other discretionary items over the past year. And you can bet Social Security and Medicare would land on his hit list of programs to cut. That’s why, if you haven’t yet signed our urgent Petition to Congress, please take a moment to do it now ( [link removed] ).

Please also consider making a donation in whatever amount you can afford ( [link removed] ) to help boost our crucial work on your behalf in the critical weeks and months ahead to protect your earned benefits from dangerous and misguided plans in Washington.

Dear Supporter,

President Trump has named billionaire Elon Musk to co-lead a “Department of Government Efficiency.” Musk, the world’s richest person, has stated that in order to put the U.S. on firm financial footing, it would likely entail, “temporary hardship” for ordinary Americans.

Like every other budget-cutting group that’s been created in the past, Musk’s so-called “Department” could lead to proposed Social Security and Medicare cuts that would devastate seniors’ retirement security, because that’s where fiscal “hawks” think the easy money is.

According to Musk, nothing is off the table during his review. He’s going to look at all government expenditures, “one item at a time, no exceptions, no special cases."

John, that’s why your member of Congress needs to hear from you today! Please sign our “Emergency Petition to Congress” ( [link removed] ) and ensure lawmakers know that you reject any attempt to target your earned Social Security and Medicare benefits as scapegoats for our nation’s fiscal problems.

As you know, budget cutting efforts like this in the past have been designed to squeeze every possible dollar of savings out of the Trust Fund programs without consideration for the adequacy of benefits during their deliberations. They serve as a vehicle for enacting deep cuts to Social Security and Medicare that could never pass Congress on their own because of their unpopularity with the voting public.

While we believe that Social Security and Medicare must undergo changes both to ensure their long-term solvency as well as to enhance benefits, the future of these critical programs must not and should not be determined as part of a budget cutting exercise.

Instead, the committees with jurisdiction over Social Security and Medicare should hold hearings and develop legislation that will have strengthening the economic and health security of the American people rather than budget cutting as its primary mission. And Congress should vote on any consensus package produced under the regular rules of the House and Senate.

Please help the National Committee raise the alarm on Musk’s “Department of Government Efficiency” and alert Congress to the dangers of any recommendations to President-elect Trump to slash one-third of the federal budget — which would have to include Social Security and Medicare — by signing our Urgent Petition to Congress today! Sincerely,

Max Richtman
