As I’m inundated with Black Friday sales and watching Amazon packages pile up around my neighborhood, I realize that it’s officially that time of year. ‘Tis the season of overconsumption and waste!


Sometimes it feels like everyone around us is in a “buy more” mentality, so being concerned about the future of the planet can feel isolating. But please know that you’re not alone! 5 Gyres’ Ambassador network is made up of nearly 2,000 individuals who share our vision for a better world. From scientists and artists to activists and entrepreneurs, this community is proof of the impact we can have if we work collectively toward the same goal.


So instead of feeling alone in your eco-anxiety and hope for a brighter future this holiday season, breathe easy knowing that there is a community of like-minded people around the globe.

Check out some accomplishments by 5 Gyres Ambassadors this year:

  • Sean Jansen paddled the length of the Baja Peninsula to raise awareness about ocean conservation and plastic pollution


  • ThĂ´ng QuĂĄch led a campaign to combat microfiber pollution from washing machines in Canada, and received 6 awards for his research on microfiber pollution


  • Mandy Barker published a book using art to tell the story of synthetic clothing in our seas


  • Tori McGruer & Macy Gustavus (No Trace Trails) surveyed trash along 2,650 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail


  • Peter Gorse’s garment facts label, offering greater transparency around the clothes we buy, is nominated for the Global Change Award

As you can see, 5 Gyres Ambassadors are some pretty inspirational people. Our hope is to continue growing this community and offering more resources and opportunities for Ambassadors in 2025, and we need your support!
