The 14th Amendment guarantees equal protection before the law to each of us.

The 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote.

And the 1st Amendment ensures we all have freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and freedom of religion.

John, how would you feel if tomorrow, they passed a new Constitution that took all those rights – and more – away?

It sounds outlandish – but that's exactly what could happen if we let the big money special interests who want to call a Constitutional Convention mess with our rights.

And I'm writing to you today because we're just 6 states away from triggering that catastrophe!

As you may already know, Common Cause is on the forefront of efforts to guard against the shadowy, extremist movement behind calls for an Article V Convention.

Why? Because every right we hold dear, and our democracy itself, could well be at stake: including everything I listed above. You see, a faction of millionaire donors and political extremists have seized upon Article V as their best chance of rolling back all the progress our nation has made since its founding.

Simply put, their vision of America isn't the same as yours and mine. They don't want to live in a country that is multicultural, inclusive, and certainly not democratic. And, most chilling of all, they'll stop at absolutely nothing to get what they want.

Here's the worst part: there's no guardrails on what policies could come out of an Article V Convention – and if they are successfully written into our Constitution, it'll take years, if not decades, to undo the damage.

But there's good news – just this year, Common Cause has demonstrated remarkable success in opposing this effort to steal away our freedom.

We’ve successfully rescinded existing convention calls in New Jersey, Illinois, Colorado, New Hampshire, Delaware, New Mexico, Maryland, and Oregon – meaning that if Common Cause hadn’t acted, we’d be just one or two states from going off the Article V cliff!

But one successful year isn't a final victory, John, this is a fight for the long haul.
