Take Action: Removing Barriers to Methadone Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder

Despite decades of research demonstrating the effectiveness of methadone to treat opioid use disorder, the medication remains stigmatized and inaccessible.

When prescribed to treat opioid use disorder, it can only be provided at specific clinics – opioid treatment programs (OTPs) – but not at doctors’ offices or pharmacies like other medications. Patients are often required to go to OTPs daily, creating major barriers to care, as well as employment, education, child care, and transportation. Studies have shown that allowing patients to take the medication at home can increase engagement in treatment and improve patient satisfaction, without causing misuse or diversion.

The Modernizing Opioid Treatment Access Act would allow methadone for opioid use disorder to be prescribed by addiction specialist physicians and accessed through local pharmacies, removing some of these barriers.

Here are two ways you can help push for increased access to methadone treatment:

- Send a letter to your members of Congress ([link removed] ) urging them to prioritize the inclusion of the Modernizing Opioid Treatment Access Act in any end-of-year legislative package.
