It’s the giving season, and everyone’s inboxes are filling up with calls for donations. But at Pittsburghers for Public Transit, we do things differently. At PPT, we’re not asking you for money. We’re asking  you to build power with us. And the best way we know to build power is to bring in new members.

I’m so proud of the work that PPT has done this year. Over the next several weeks, we will send a series of emails highlighting our members and our wins. We collaborated with the Department of Human Services to develop the Allegheny Go program, which offers half-price fares to SNAP households. We also fought for and won Pittsburgh Regional Transit’s PRTner Pass Program, which allows businesses, landlords, and schools to buy monthly passes for employees, residents, and students at a deep discount. We even got one of our own members, Bobbie Fan, appointed to the PRT advisory board. The secret to our success is that we’re not just a public service organization – we’re a grassroots union of transit riders, workers, and neighbors. 

Membership is the anchor of our transformative activism. As a union, we organize for an expanded, affordable, accessible public transit system that serves ALL residents of Allegheny County, with no communities left behind. The more members we have:

• The more power and influence we have in our city and region
• The more our elected officials have to listen to our voices as we push back against manufactured austerity and demand more services
• The more fully our demands reflect the needs of working class, BIPOC, and other minoritized riders
• The more our diverse communities own our agenda and direct our priorities

Jack, our members fuel our fire. That’s why we’re aiming to grow our membership by 50%. Will you help us reach our goal of adding 100 members by December 31? 

Because we’re here for all riders, we are committed to keeping our membership  accessible. The minimum cost of joining is just $2.75, the same as one ride on PRT. But to be fully accountable to our members, we need our membership to fund the bottom line of our budget.
