Dear John, This Thanksgiving, we want to take a moment to express our deepest gratitude for you—our partner in keeping families together by defending the rights and dignity of immigrants. Your support powers the National Immigrant Justice Center’s (NIJC) work providing life-changing legal services, advocacy, and defense for immigrants and their families. For over 40 years, NIJC has been a beacon of hope, offering safety, family unity, and justice in the face of increasing challenges. With your help, we have stood strong, using every tool available to defend immigrants, challenge unjust policies, and create a more compassionate and welcoming country. Your generosity has made stories like Helen’s possible. Helen first turned to NIJC in 2012, when her brother Tedros faced deportation to Eritrea. Tedros and his entire family had immigrated to the U.S. as a child, and they were all U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents. He was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and faced deportation. NIJC’s Detention Team stepped in to represent Tedros, and he won his case, securing protection from deportation. Tedros was released and reunited with his family—where he belonged. Years later, Helen’s family faced another challenge. Her brother Mieron was detained by ICE, fearing persecution if returned to Eritrea. Helen turned to NIJC once again. I represented Mieron, and he was granted protection under the Convention Against Torture. Mieron, too, was released and reunited with his family. Helen wrote this note after her family was reunited: Thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you have done to put our family together again. We will always be grateful. Love, Helen |
