John, this is a disaster. H.R. 9495 passed the House and is now on its way to the Senate. This bill passed the House with a 219-184 vote.
This bill would give the federal government the power to investigate and effectively shut down any tax-exempt organization—including news outlets, universities, and civil society groups—by stripping them of tax-exempt status based on a unilateral accusation of wrongdoing.
And this isn’t just some far-right bullsh*t. House Democrats worked alongside Republicans to get this bill passed through the House.

This bill can’t go any further. Urge your Senator to reject H.R. 9495 and protect non-profits' right to fight for justice. We must defeat this bill right here, right now.
The politicians on both sides who are supporting this bill need to look in the mirror. They’re aiding and abetting authoritarians who want to stifle dissent and democracy.
They spend trillions on endless wars that destabilize regions, displace millions, and create generations of suffering.
They funnel $100 billion annually into police forces that perpetuate violence and undermine community safety.
They ignore the climate crisis, backing corporations that pollute the environment, destroy ecosystems, and endanger future generations.
They cut essential programs like healthcare, housing, and education, leaving millions in poverty while enriching the wealthy through tax breaks and subsidies.
If H.R. 9495 passes, nonprofits working to address these atrocities could face shutdowns or be labeled ‘terrorist-supporting’ under the bill’s broad and overreaching definitions—a twisted move when the real terror comes from the lawmakers themselves.
It will give politicians the power to dismantle the very organizations fighting to hold them accountable.
The playbook of this bill—and the politicians who want to see it pass is this: destroy the opposition, bury the truth, and ensure no one is left to challenge their power.
The Senate must reject H.R. 9495. Take action with us by sending a letter to your Senator now. We don’t have any time to waste.
In solidarity,
Black Lives Matter
Our grassroots movement is pushing for Black liberation every single day. We are striving to create a world where Black people do so much more than just survive. It’s time we thrive.
As an organization one of our biggest hurdles is consistency.
A recurring contribution of anything you can afford goes a long way as we plan for the months, years, and even decades ahead. This is the most effective way for small-dollar donors (like you) to power our Black liberation work.
Will you make a recurring contribution of $5 or more today so that we can keep building momentum for our movement?
