Friends,
The nanny state is growing in Minnesota, where we have become the state with the second highest cost per person in poverty, coming in at almost $40,000. In 2021 about 27.6%, or $18.9 Billion dollars is paid from our state’s general expenditures. The only state with a higher cost share for those in poverty was Massachusetts.
As of 2022, this trend has only continued now with a staggering $22 billion going to welfare spending. This puts Minnesota well above other states, where 30% of our state budget covers public welfare, compared to 24% median cost for all other states.
It is likely these numbers will only get worse after Minnesota, under Democrat trifecta control, spent an unprecedented $18 billion dollar surplus whilst raising taxes another $10 billion in 2023/2024. New programs like free MinnesotaCare for illegal immigrants, or 4-year college to non-citizens haven’t even been added to the mix yet. Combine this with an ever-aging work force, and Minnesotan’s are facing a real issue with welfare costs.
