Dear Friend,
Thanksgiving is almost here, and I'm feeling grateful for the incredible community in District 5, for the work we've done together, and for the chance to serve you. Whether you're gathering with family, enjoying some Minnesota hot dish, or creating your own Thanksgiving traditions, I'm sending warm wishes to each of you.
Take a look at what I’ve been up to in Washington and the district.

Introducing a Resolution Designating National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Black Women and Girls
I joined Representative Tim Burchett in introducing a resolution to designate December 16, 2024, as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Black Women and Girls. This day will serve as a reminder of the ongoing crisis of violence against Black women and girls in our country and the need to take action.
Our work on this issue isn't new. Last year, I worked with Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman to introduce the Brittany Clardy Act, which would create a dedicated office for Missing and Murdered Black Women and Girls within the Department of Justice. Just this past June, Rep. Betty McCollum and I wrote a letter to President Biden and Attorney General Garland, urging them to establish this crucial office.
Minnesota already has a state-level model for this work, and I'm confident we can—and must—replicate this approach nationally.
Asking President Biden to Grant Clemency
As President Biden’s term comes to an end, I joined a press conference urging him to use the power of clemency to bring justice and relief to those who deserve a second chance. Right now, thousands of people are waiting for clemency decisions—many of them are individuals who have already served decades for nonviolent offenses, turned their lives around, and are ready to contribute to their families and communities. With so many lives hanging in the balance, I believe it’s time for bold, compassionate leadership to offer these individuals the redemption they deserve. Watch my full speech here.
Presenting Greg Kaster’s family with his Congressional Record
I had the opportunity to present to Kate Wittenstein the Congressional Record highlighting the legacy of her late husband, Professor Gregory Kaster. Professor Kaster taught at Gustavus Adolphus College for over 3 decades, developing the History Department and inspiring countless students. His passion for liberal arts and making the world better will live on through all those he touched.
Honoring Veterans
It was an honor to participate in the State of Minnesota Veterans Day. Thank you to all our Veterans and their families who have selflessly served our country. We must continue to honor our Veterans by passing meaningful legislation to fund stable housing, expand healthcare, and address Veteran suicide.
In Service,
Ilhan Omar
