John,
Plastic pollution is everywhere, including in our drinking water. Microplastics, tiny particles and fibers that break off from containers and clothing, are pervasive in our environment.
That’s why Food & Water Watch just filed a legal petition with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to begin addressing this huge microplastics problem! The next few months are key to making this happen, so we need you to take action now.
Will you join us in urging the EPA to protect our water? Send a message to the EPA today: Start monitoring for and regulating microplastics to keep our water safe!
It’s estimated that the average person consumes 4,000 or more microplastic particles from drinking water each year. Microplastics consumption presents a significant health risk—including an increased risk of cancer—yet the EPA hasn’t taken steps to monitor and regulate microplastics in drinking water.
PROTECT MY WATER
As required by the Safe Drinking Water Act, the EPA must develop a monitoring program for up to 30 unregulated contaminants in drinking water every five years. This process is required regardless of who the President is, and it is scheduled to start again in 2025.
We’re demanding that the EPA start monitoring for microplastics and pave the way for future regulation to keep our water safe. Send a message to support our petition to the EPA to monitor for microplastics!
The EPA will likely make an initial decision on whether to monitor for microplastics by August 2025. That means we have just a few months to pressure the agency to include microplastics in its monitoring rule.
This process is required by law under the Safe Drinking Water Act. Even after the Trump administration takes over, EPA will still have to issue a monitoring rule. It’s our job to hold them accountable and keep fighting to protect our drinking water.
Join our fight and tell EPA: Start monitoring for microplastics to protect our drinking water!
Onward together,
Thomas Meyer
