Email from Los Angeles Police Protective League Daily News & Updates   Law Enforcement News Investigation Underway After Baby's Body Found Inside Luggage Underneath I-10 Overpass In Mid-City An investigation is underway after an infant's body was discovered inside of a suitcase underneath a 10 Freeway overpass in Mid-City on Sunday. Officers were sent to the area, underneath the freeway at Washington Boulevard, at around 4 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Upon arrival, they found the infant's body and set up a crime scene, blocking off much of the area with tape. Circumstances surrounding the death remain under investigation. No further information was provided. CBS 2 3 People Shot In Apparent Road Rage Incident In South LA Three people were shot in what police are calling a road rage shooting in South Los Angeles on Saturday. It happened at around 3 p.m. near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Woodland Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Officers arrived and found the victims, one man and two juveniles, suffering from gunshot wounds, they told KCAL News. All of the victims are said to be in stable condition, police noted. They have no information on the alleged shooter or the moments that led up to the incident. CBS 2 Man Shot In Westchester Taken To Hospital A man suffering from a gunshot wound in Westchester area was taken to a hospital Sunday. About 8:45 p.m. Sunday, police responded to a shooting in the 5500 block of Thornburn Street and Kittyhawk Avenue, just north of San Diego (405) Freeway, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Officers found the victim conscious and breathing, and he was transported to a local hospital. His condition was not immediately available. The man, sitting inside a car with a woman, accidentally shot himself and unsuccessfully tried to hide the weapon, according to OnScene.TV. However, the cause of the shooting was not confirmed by police. MyNewsLA Father Of Missing Hawaii Woman Found Dead In Apparent Suicide In Los Angeles, LAPD Says The father of a missing Hawaii woman, Ryan Kobayashi, has died after an apparent suicide, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The 58-year-old father had been searching for his daughter, 30-year-old Hannah Kobayashi, after she missed her connecting flight to New York from LAX. Hannah was supposed to meet with family on Nov. 8, according to family. Kobayashi died after he jumped off from a parking structure near LAX sometime around 4 a.m. on Sunday, police confirmed. A vigil was held outside of Crypto.com Arena Thursday for Hannah, who is still missing. On Nov. 11, family members say they received strange text messages from Hannah about someone trying to steal her identity. All calls that day went straight to voicemail. The family has not heard from her since. Surveillance footage shows Kobayashi boarding a Metro at Pico Station at 10 p.m. on Nov. 18. “We’re trying to make them take us seriously because it’s been 11 days,” said Laire Pidgeon, Kobayashi’s aunt. “Just because she doesn’t have a mental illness and just because she is not elderly doesn’t mean something didn’t happen to her.” Kobayashi was last seen wearing black leggings, a tie-dye sweatshirt and a green backpack. Any information regarding her whereabouts should be reported to LAPD. NBC 4 Exposition Park Hit-and-Run: Person Of Interest ID'd After Teen Struck, Killed At BMO Stadium Authorities announced a possible break in the case after a 16-year-old bicyclist was struck and killed by a suspected road rage driver in Exposition Park at BMO Stadium in the days before Thanksgiving. Officials with the California Highway Patrol said on Friday afternoon, about 40 teen bicyclists were riding south on Figueroa Street when an altercation occurred between the group and the driver of a Honda sedan. Witnesses said the driver followed the group into the BMO Stadium parking lot, where they proceeded to strike the young victim and fled the scene. The teen victim was not believed to be involved in the initial dispute. The name of the victim has not been released by authorities. Over the weekend, CHP detectives served a search warrant at a residence believed to be connected to the suspect, identified as a 28-year-old resident of LA. In addition, investigators said two vehicles were seized as evidence. The deadly incident has been called a "horrible tragedy." FOX 11 Southern California School Counselor Charged With Molesting 8 Elementary Students A Los Angeles assistant principal was arrested Friday on suspicion of molesting eight young children while working at a Santa Paula elementary school several years ago, authorities said. David Lane Braff Jr., 42, of Thousand Oaks is accused of molesting eight students ages 6 to 10 in a school office at McKevett Elementary School, where he worked as a counselor from 2015 to 2019, according to the Ventura County district attorney’s office. At the time of his arrest, Braff was an assistant principal and school counselor at Ingenium Charter Middle School in Winnetka, prosecutors said. He has been charged with 17 felony counts of lewd acts upon a child under 14 years old and will be arraigned Monday in Ventura County Superior Court, prosecutors said. He is being held in Ventura County jail on $3-million bail, prosecutors said. “The defendant is alleged to have molested multiple elementary school children over a number of years, shattering the trust placed in him by parents, educators and the public,” Ventura County Dist. Atty. Erik Nasarenko said in a statement. “We intend to vigorously prosecute this case and encourage others to come forward who may have information about additional victims and crimes.” Los Angeles Times Southern California Woman Accused Of Operating Brothels Disguised As Skin Care Spas A Southern California woman was arrested for allegedly operating brothels at the skin care spas she owned in Ventura and Orange counties. The suspect was identified as Amanda Xia, 44, from Yorba Linda, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office. In early 2024, detectives began investigating reports that Swan Spa, located in the 100 block of North Rancho Road in Thousand Oaks, was allegedly operating as a commercial sex establishment. Authorities said evidence was found that confirmed the suspect, Xia, was financially benefitting from the illicit services her employees were offering to customers. Xia also owned three other spa locations which investigators identified as brothels involved in similar illegal sex operations. “Detectives were able to positively identify multiple male individuals suspected of purchasing commercial sex at each of the four locations under investigation,” officials said. Xia was arrested at her Orange County home on charges of pimping, pandering and money laundering. KTLA 5 7 Arrested In California For Allegedly Stealing $200K In Nike Jordan Shoes From Train Container Police recovered more than $200,000 in Nike Jordan shoes during a California Highway Patrol operation in Anaheim Friday morning. The agency arrested seven people while they allegedly transported the stolen merchandise in a U-Haul box truck. The group allegedly stole the shoes from a train container near the remote Mojave Desert community of Amboy, Calif. The group allegedly drove the boxes filled with Jordans nearly 190 miles to Anaheim. The CHP Border Division's Cargo Theft Interdiction Progam tracked the suspects' U-Haul and a connected pickup truck and pulled them over at 11:25 a.m. While searching the vehicles, officers found burglar tools allegedly used to break into the train container, as well as the shoes. The seven suspects were booked into Orange County Jail on felony grand theft of cargo charges. "The swift actions of our CTIP unit and patrol officers demonstrate CHP's commitment to combating organized cargo theft and ensuring stolen goods are recovered," said CHP Border Division Chief Tommie Cocroft. CBS 2 Girlfriend Of Man Who Killed 2 Minnesota Officer, 1 Paramedic To Plead Guilty To Firearms Purchases The woman charged with providing guns for the man who fatally shot three Burnsville first responders and wounded another says she is ready to plead guilty to federal charges. Ashley Anne Dyrdahl, 36, was indicted by a grand jury in March on 11 counts, including conspiracy, straw purchasing and making false statements, for procuring five firearms on behalf of 38-year-old Shannon Cortez Gooden, who was prohibited from having them based on a prior conviction. The two AR-15-style firearms used to kill the three Burnsville first responders and wound another in February were bought by Dyrdahl, Gooden’s girlfriend, just weeks before he used them to unload more than 100 rounds during an hourslong standoff at the couple’s home, according to the charges. Two rifles used in the Feb. 18 shooting were bought by Dyrdahl on Jan. 5 and Jan. 25, respectively, weeks before Gooden shot and killed officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge, both 27 and firefighter-paramedic Adam Finseth, 40, then took his own life. Gooden also wounded Burnsville police Sgt. Adam Medlicott during the shootout. Dyrdahl was living at the home with Gooden on the day police were called in response to a domestic abuse call. Gooden barricaded himself inside with seven children present. Star Tribune Public Safety News Vehicle, 2 Occupants Plunge Into Crowded Marina Del Rey Harbor Two people were taken to the hospital after a vehicle they were inside plunged into the harbor Sunday night in Marina Del Rey, officials confirmed to KTLA. Details are limited and It’s unclear exactly how the incident occurred, but authorities with the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to 4675 Admiralty Way just after 6 p.m. on reports of the vehicle in the water. Both were examined by medical personnel with the fire department and taken to a nearby hospital in unknown condition. Rodriguez said that two L.A. County Lifeguard divers were deployed to ensure there were no other occupants trapped in the vehicle. L.A. County Fire Department Public Information Officer Marco Rodriguez said the two occupants were able to get themselves out of the vehicle after it went into the water. A witness, Johnny Hamcheck, told KTLA that a third person, a woman, exited the vehicle before it went into water, though officials did not confirm that detail. KTLA 5 Large Downtown Los Angeles Building Fire Disrupts Metro Rail Service Fire crews worked for over two hours Monday morning, battling a stubborn, massive building fire in downtown Los Angeles that disrupted Metro rail service. According to Metro, because the building fire on Flower Street near Venice Boulevard was near the tracks, bus shuttles are replacing A and E Line service. The fire broke out in the vacant two-story building around 4 a.m. and Los Angeles Fire Department crews arrived as flames ripped through the roof. Crews worked in defensive mode, protecting neighboring buildings from the fire. LAFD said it took 80 firefighters two hours and 33 minutes to put out the blaze. While there were no injuries reported, crews said there were possibly homeless people living inside.
