On Last Week Tonight, John Oliver reviewed just how much Donald Trump flouted ethics norms for incoming presidents.

In Trump’s first term, he refused to release his tax returns. He refused to put his assets in a blind trust. He refused to abide by the ethics norms and precedents set by previous presidents.

John, it’s clear that norms are not enough when it comes to Donald Trump.

There need to be ethical guardrails on the presidency, which means Congress must pass the Protecting Our Democracy Act. Now.

The Protecting Our Democracy Act would strengthen the guardrails of our democracy. It would enforce the Hatch Act, increase Inspectors General protections, prevent presidential self-pardons and require presidents release their tax returns. It would limit the powers of the presidency and place guardrails against misconduct in order to meaningfully honor our constitutional system of checks and balances and limit anti-democratic behaviors.

John, there are an endless number of critical reforms that the Protecting Our Democracy Act would make. Reforms that CREW has worked years to advance.
