Drax burns wood from forests to produce electricity. They claim this is “renewable” because trees can be replanted and grow back naturally over time. Since 2012, the UK government has handed Drax £7 billion in subsidies, because it’s supposedly helping to fight climate change. [2]
The truth? Drax is the UK’s biggest polluter, burning the equivalent of 27 million trees every year, destroying some of the world’s most biodiverse forests and devastating communities, wildlife, and the climate. [3] [4] It’s outrageous and we must stop it.
Right now, the Labour government is deciding whether to renew Drax’s subsidies. Next week, we’re delivering a petition to the UK government to demand an end to these subsidies. Over 100,000 people have signed - can you help us reach 150,000 to make our voices impossible to ignore?
