After a year of monumental elections around the world, from India and France to the United States, change is everywhere.

We will face a new reality in 2025, which may bring some uncertainty and fear. As close to 40% of anti-rights governments begin to dismantle equal rights for women and girls, Equality Now’s global work to create enduring legal equality has become increasingly vital. We can’t afford to wait to see what happens next – we must act now.

The rise of anti-rights movements and authoritarian regimes is a global problem that requires a global solution. Equality Now works with coalitions and women leaders across five continents to not only create positive, lasting change but also hold the line against threats to progress.

In the Middle East and North Africa, the Hurra Coalition, comprised of 12 women’s rights organizations from nine countries with Equality Now as the Secretariat, is pushing back against fundamentalist norms and actors to reform gender-discriminatory family laws and practices. The Coalition is mentoring young female and male activists to help amplify their voices and develop their media skills to advocate for greater rights and protections in the region.

In Eurasia, where some governments are increasingly targeting civil society and human rights organizations, our Eurasia Network helps bring together over 100 organizations and advocates to collaborate on advancing legal reforms and improving the implementation of laws on sexual violence, especially for persons with disabilities and minors.

Our new coalition in South Asia, the South Asian Movement for Accessing Justice (SAMAJ) with organizations from Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and the Maldives, is dedicated to combating sexual violence through legal reforms, survivor-centric approaches, and inclusion of marginalized communities. Already, SAMAJ has collaborated on joint papers to share knowledge, good practices, and suggestions for change, such as compensation and support services for survivors.

In Latin America and the Caribbean, we collaborated with a regional expert group of lawyers, judges, and prosecutors who brought their intersectional and ethics lenses to inform regional guidelines for investigating and litigating cases of sexual violence, developed by the Network Specialized on Gender of prosecutors from across Latin America.

We also founded, engage in, and provide secretariat services to global networks, such as the Alliance for Universal Digital Rights (AUDRi), which works to ensure a safe digital future rooted in human rights law, and the Global Campaign for Equality in Family Law, which focuses on reforming discriminatory family laws. Both initiatives allow us to engage a broader audience for a stronger impact.
