Deny Dangerous LNG Exports Before a Second Trump Term

The Biden administration hit pause on climate-busting liquefied
natural gas (LNG) exports earlier this year while they analyzed
whether such projects are in the public interest.

Ask the Biden administration to finish what it started and
protect us from LNG and other dirty fuels – and tell them to
reject exports of harmful LNG before it’s too late.

Dear NRDC Activist,

56 days.

That is how long we have until the second
Trump administration takes office. We have a finite window to
take climate action before the new administration’s pro-oil and
gas agenda is set in motion.

I’m writing because there’s an action you
can take right now to combat dirty energy.

Urge the Biden administration to reject
projects that export dangerous liquefied natural gas (LNG) — a
critical step toward phasing out LNG and other dirty fossil fuels
that are driving the climate crisis and threatening our health. ( [link removed] )

LNG is a dangerous, climate-destroying energy source on so many
levels. The energy required to chill, ship, and regasify LNG is
very carbon-intensive and increases the potential for leakage of
dangerous methane, a greenhouse gas that is 80 times more potent
than carbon dioxide.

At the beginning of the year, the Biden
administration hit pause on climate-busting LNG exports while
they updated the criteria they use to analyze whether such
projects are in the public interest. Up until now, these
approvals were based on studies crafted by the Trump
administration and remarkably, even the Reagan administration.

Ask the Biden administration to finish
what it started and protect us from LNG and other dirty fuels —
and tell them to deny projects that export dangerous LNG. ( [link removed] )

Most LNG facilities are being built to process and ship gas
abroad — at the cost of the health, safety, and well-being of
communities from New Jersey to the Gulf Coast of Louisiana and
Texas.

As with other fossil fuel infrastructure, these facilities are
disproportionately and deliberately sited in low-income
neighborhoods and in communities of color.

The U.S. is the world’s largest exporter of LNG — so the nation
has a critical role to play in phasing it out on a global scale.

Regardless of the incoming Trump administration’s stance on LNG,
the Biden administration’s act of denying LNG exports would
deliver official, up-to-date climate science on LNG to the public
record and underscore the urgency of phasing out this dangerous
fuel, adding a hurdle if the next administration wants to resume
LNG exports.

The Biden administration has been the strongest environmental
presidency in U.S. history, enacting the most significant climate
investment ever and moving beyond fossil fuels to cleaner ways to
power our future. It’s up to us to urge the administration to
make every day count and take climate action.
