Hi John.
I hope you and your family are well. I know many folks are looking forward to Thanksgiving later this week.
So today, I wanted to send a quick note with resources that may help lower your grocery prices and to help your family stay safe. I’m also continuing my focus on concrete and bipartisan solutions to lower costs.
That includes working with both parties to help Kansas farmers and ranchers. Securing our agricultural supply chains helps our state's economy and lowers prices for families. That's why I helped introduce the bipartisan Securing American Agriculture Act. Our bill helps prevent market disruptions, like spikes in fertilizer costs or invasive pests, that can raise prices. It also pushes back on China’s dominance in agriculture. And I'm continuing to fight price gouging by pushing for a new investigation into unfair practices that raise prices.

I was glad to recently shop with Betsy, a local Mission resident, and hear more about her concerns. I understand high grocery prices are a serious concern for Kansas families. That’s why I’ve directed my office to connect Kansans with resources to help local families.
Here are some specific resources that may help you and your family this Thanksgiving. Please feel free to forward this message to anyone you know.
• Budget Smart Tools for Groceries: The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has published resources that can help families find healthy and nutritious foods at more affordable prices. That includes ways to stretch your dollars and better deals through unit pricing.
• Shop Simple with the USDA MyPlate App: The USDA has an app that may be able to help you find more savings in your area.
• Food Assistance: Hardworking families who are struggling may qualify for emergency help to put food on the table. This link might help connect you with resources that can best fit your situation.
• Johnson County Food Pantries: Johnson County also operates food pantries at three different multi-service center locations. They may be able to help people who are going through hard times get back on their feet. It also may be an opportunity for Kansans to give back to their communities.
• Food Safety: The U.S. Centers for Disease Control says that more than 128,000 people a year are hospitalized for foodborne illnesses. At foodsafety.gov, you can find information from experts on how to safely handle, prepare, and store foods to protect yourself and your loved ones. The USDA also recently released Thanksgiving specific safety advice. You may also call their Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-674-6854 from 10 AM to 6 PM ET, Monday through Friday, to ask questions from a food safety specialist. They’re open on Thanksgiving Day from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM ET, or you can email [email protected] or chat live at www.ask.usda.gov.
• Cooking Safety: According to the U.S. Fire Administration, cooking is far and away the leading cause of home fires and related fire injuries. They recommend always standing by your pan when cooking and turning the burner off if you ever have to walk away. Pot handles should face towards the back of the stove so that no one can bump into them or pull them over by accident.
It’s an incredible honor and privilege to serve you in the U.S. House of Representatives. Whether we agree on every issue or not is beside the point. Everyone deserves a government that works for them – not just for special interests, big corporations, or the extremes of either party.
I hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
My warmest regards,
Sharice L. Davids Member of Congress
