Help Us Stuff a Blue Goose!

Stuff a Blue Goose

The holiday season is here, and it's the perfect time to give back! Michigan State Police posts across the state are hosting "Stuff a Blue Goose" events, where we fill our patrol cars with donations for local families in need.  Troopers will be collecting non-perishable food items and new toys to benefit families this holiday season.

Shop Smart, Shop Safe: Avoiding Holiday Scams

As the holiday shopping season approaches, it’s important to stay vigilant against common scams that target online and in-store shoppers. Scammers are ready to exploit the holiday rush, but with a few precautions, you can avoid falling victim to their tricks.

* *Beware of Fake Websites:* Always verify the website before making a purchase. Look for secure site indicators (such as the “S” in the “https” part of the URL) and avoid clicking on links in unsolicited emails.
* *Watch Out for "Too-Good-To-Be-True" Deals*: Scammers lure victims with unrealistically low prices or deep discounts. If it seems too good to be true, it likely is.
* *Keep Personal Information Private:* Legitimate stores won’t ask for personal information like your social security number or banking details. Be cautious of anyone requesting more than necessary payment information.
* *Be Cautious with Public Wi-Fi:* Avoid making purchases or entering sensitive information over public Wi-Fi networks, as these are often unsecured and may be monitored by hackers.
* *Monitor Your Accounts:* Regularly check your bank and credit card statements to quickly identify unauthorized purchases.

If you suspect you’ve encountered a scam, contact your local law enforcement agency or report it to the Federal Trade Commission. [ [link removed]. ]

Know Your Plan. Be Alert.

Know Your Plan. Be Alert.

The Michigan State Police Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD) is encouraging Michiganders to be prepared with a new public awareness campaign called “Know Your Plan. Be Alert.” The campaign seeks to increase the number of people who are subscribed to receive electronic emergency alerts from their local community [ [link removed] ].

Local emergency alerts, which usually come as text messages, provide life-safety information direct from local emergency management programs about severe weather, active shooter incidents, missing/endangered individuals and other emergencies occurring in your geographic area.

Winter is Coming

Winter is on the way, and now is the perfect time to get ready for the chilly months ahead!  Here are some essential tips to help you and your loved ones stay safe this season:

* Have an emergency preparedness kit at home that includes water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, a first aid kit, pet supplies, important documents and extra warm clothing and blankets.
* Clear out your gutters to avoid ice dams, which can lead to water buildup and costly damage to your home’s interior.
* Add weather-stripping around windows and doors, and insulate walls, attics and basements to keep the cold out and the warmth in.
* Place carbon monoxide detectors near sleeping areas.
* Keep your vehicle's gas tank at least half full to prevent frozen fuel lines and ice buildup.
* Make sure your tires are properly inflated and keep your windshield washer fluid full.

November is Native American Heritage Month

Native American Heritage Month

November is Native American Heritage Month, a time to honor the traditions, language and history of Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian and affiliated Island communities.

In the MSP, our American Indian Employee Resource Group (ERG) is one of seven ERGs that support our members. Their mission is to provide MSP members of all Tribal affiliations with a place to participate in community, develop professionally and assist in the department’s cultural enrichment and awareness efforts by making Native American culture visible in the MSP.
