Hi Friend –
Congress hasn’t passed a major bill to protect kids online since 1998. A whole generation has grown up without meaningful legislation to keep them safe on the Internet.
But this year, the Senate overwhelmingly passed the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA), a bill that would protect youth mental health online. This bill is stalled in the House of Representatives. We need to make sure it gets passed to prevent further harm.
Accountable Tech, in partnership with the youth-led coalition Design It For Us, hosts a weekly KOSA power hour, where supporters like you meet virtually to call our Representatives and demand they pass KOSA now. We know folks are traveling for the holidays, but we need lawmakers to have this top of mind before they spend time with their families and the kids in their lives. Sign up to join us tomorrow.
KOSA would protect kids from addictive design features and keep online platforms accountable for how they treat young users. The bill would require social media companies to provide the ability to turn off engagement-based algorithms that influence the recommendations users receive. Young users or their parents would be able to stop recommendation systems that are sending them toxic information, like content about disordered eating.
The bill passed the Senate 91-3 in July, but Big Tech monopolies have shelled out millions lobbying against KOSA. [1] So it’s time for us to raise our voices and ensure that our elected officials listen to us, not corporate lobbyists. Join our power hour this week and connect with other like-minded activists ready to stand up to Big Tech for our kids.
We’ll provide you with all the tools you need to be confident as you make calls. Together, we can remind our House Reps. that they serve their constituents, not corporations. We can’t wait to see you there.
