Each year, we hold the Race Against Hunger as a fundraising event to support the year-round work we do to end hunger in our region. Although the Virtual Race Against Hunger has ended, we are still raising money as part of the Race through May 31. We know that the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have changed the landscape of food insecurity in our country as millions of Americans have turned to programs like SNAP for the first time. With unemployment claims topping 36 million over the past two months, supporting our community and connecting them to needed resources has never been more important. With this in mind, we have been advocating for (1) boosting the maximum SNAP benefit by 15 percent; (2) increasing the monthly minimum SNAP benefit from $16 to $30; and (3) suspending harmful rules that would terminate or weaken SNAP eligibility and benefits. This week, all three measures were introduced in the next COVID-19 relief package — H.R. 6800, The Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions (HEROES) Act. While we celebrate this small victory, the work continues to ensure that these measures are included in the final package and set our sights on other important advocacy work. When you make a donation to the Race Against Hunger, you support advocacy work that fights for community members hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. Thank you to our wonderful supporters for being a part of the movement to end hunger! |
