[ [link removed] ]Welch for Vermont
Hi Friend,
It’s been a few weeks since Election Day, and we’ve all had some time to
sit with the results. They are obviously disappointing to me and many of
you. Some Vermonters have come up to me and wondered where we go from
here.
We don’t know exactly how Trump will govern. We don’t know what specific
harms he will try to cause. But here’s what I do know:
I’ll fight to lower costs and boost the middle class. Throughout my time
in the House and now in the Senate, much of my legislative work has
centered around lowering everyday costs, like lowering energy bills and
the price you pay for your medications. If Trump tries to pass tariffs
that raise the price of groceries or tries to give corporations tax breaks
while raising taxes on the middle class, I’ll fight it.
I’ll fight to protect the pillars of our democracy. Donald Trump is and
remains a threat to our democracy. He incited the January 6 insurrection.
He told the Big Lie about the 2020 election results. He’s indicated he may
try to circumvent checks and balances to force through unpopular policies
he wants to implement. Our country can’t function without a healthy
democracy. I’ll fight any attempt to weaken the fundamental pillars our
nation is built on.
I’ll fight for the rights of vulnerable communities. Everyone deserves to
be treated not only equally under the law, but equally in society. For
vulnerable communities—like the LGBTQ+ community—they’re entering an
uncertain era with a new government that may not fight for them. I’ll
always fight to protect vulnerable communities in Vermont and around the
country.
I’ll work across the aisle to deliver for Vermonters. I’ve been in
Congress in the majority and the minority. Regardless of who is in the
majority, there are always ways to reach across the aisle and get stuff
done. Many of the issues that Vermonters face are the same issues my
Republican colleagues tell me their constituents face. I’ll keep working
in a bipartisan way to make a difference.
The years ahead are going to be tough, no doubt about it. But if we stand
together and stand strong, we can protect the values that we hold dear.
Onward,
Peter
