Hi John
The COVID-19 crisis is hitting the world’s most vulnerable communities
the hardest, which is why we've just launched two rapid response projects
as part of our Empower To Plan programme. Based in some of Africa's largest
slums, Ghettoh Clean [3] and KOMB GREEN Solutions [4] are community-led
projects that combine environmental protection with improving awareness of
and access to family planning. WILL YOU SUPPORT THEIR VITAL WORK TO
PREVENT INFECTIONS AND A SURGE IN UNWANTED PREGNANCIES WITH A DONATION?
Myself and my colleague Florence met with community health workers last
year when we visited Nairobi's Kibra slum, and we were as impressed by
their dedication as we were daunted by the challenges they face. These two
groups have already made vital contributions to their communities on
shoestring budgets, and we know they will deliver vital services at this
critical time right where they are needed. Read about both projects below.
Ghettoh Clean
Ghettoh Clean Youth Group was set up in 2015 in Kibra, Africa's largest
slum, and aims to conserve the local environment through responsible waste
disposal. It also plans to improve provision of family planning services,
with the goal of fighting the increasing number of HIV infections and early
pregnancies in Kenya. As a youth group, its work creates opportunities for
young people in the area who may otherwise find themselves resorting to
crime.
In response to COVID-19, Ghettoh Clean is now in urgent need of convenient
and economical handwashing facilities. Condoms will also be distributed at
the newly formed handwashing points, helping to offset the lack of
contraceptives currently available from the nearby health facility. Your
assistance will help local residents protect themselves and their families
during the pandemic.

KOMB GREEN Solutions
KOMB GREEN Solutions, founded in 2017, is located in Korogocho, one of
Nairobi's largest slum neighbourhoods. Its purpose is to transform the
lives of local people through meaningful conservation work, as well as the
delivery of family planning services. The group has already been successful
in clearing solid waste out of Nairobi River and creating a safe and
relaxing recreational park alongside it.
KOMB GREEN now needs help to purchase protective and sanitary equipment for
the community, including gloves, overalls, and industrial masks, and to
construct public sinks for handwashing. Your support will also allow the
group to invest in the distribution of condoms to those in need, a vital
service that Komb Green hopes will help to reduce the number of unwanted
pregnancies resulting in unsafe abortions and "baby dumping".

Any amount you are able to donate today will go a long way. Thank you in
advance for your support.
Best wishes,
