Thanksgiving Week Activity: Civic Stories Program

Here’s a ready-to-use, engaging activity for this short week: Have your students watch our pre-recorded Civic Stories program on The History of Thanksgiving.

In the 27-minute video, NCC museum educators discuss the culture of the Wampanoag people, and the historic meal they shared with European settlers in 1621. Students will also learn about the roles presidents have played in creating the Thanksgiving holiday as well as popular traditions, including the presidential turkey pardon.

You can find more programs and online resources on Thanksgiving provided by the Center. Please note that the National Constitution Center is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 28.

Last Chance to Apply: Weekend Workshops

The deadline to apply for NCC Weekend Workshops is quickly approaching. Applications close December 9 and notifications will be sent in January.

This set of Weekend Workshops is only open to applicants in rural, remote, or underserved communities.

Participants can expect to:  

• Engage with leading scholars on topics covering landmark Supreme Court cases 
• Discover historical content through guided tours of the Center’s exhibitions 
• Explore our educational framework and learn about our nonpartisan educational resources, such as the Interactive Constitution and Constitution 101
• Collaborate with other attendees and the NCC Education team

Dates and themes:

• Friday, 3/28–Sunday, 3/30: Landmark Supreme Court Cases: The Founding Era 
• Friday, 4/25–Sunday, 4/27: Landmark Supreme Court Cases: The Second Founding 
• Friday, 5/16–Sunday, 5/18: Landmark Supreme Court Cases: Modern Connections 

The Center covers the costs of all travel, lodging, and meals for those selected to participate, but space is limited to no more than 15 educators.

The NCC Education Team is Hiring

The NCC Education team is seeking two professional learning specialists (one remote and one based in Philadelphia) who will play key roles in the expansion of our professional development programs and trainings to educators both on-site at the Center and in states and localities across the country.

Position Summary:

• The professional learning specialist will also collaborate with other members of the Education department to develop interactive and relevant educational programming that aligns with the Center’s goals, and with educational best practices within the field for both student and adult learners.
• The specialist will lead tasks such as presenting sessions to educators and coordinate logistical efforts for all professional learning endeavors. They will also attend education and civics conferences nationwide to share information about the Center’s educational materials and programs.

We encourage all interested candidates to learn more about the roles and submit an application. All current or former members of NCC’s Teacher Advisory Board and Teacher Advisory Council should note their affiliation in their application.
