Hi, there! It's Oliver, the health and the environment reporter for PublicSource. While most of my time recently has been devoted to health matters, the global disruption of COVID-19 has resulted in various impacts on the environment and climate as well.
I thought it may help readers to hear about the pandemic's effect on climate locally. So, I looked at four areas: air pollution, climate change, oil prices and waste.
You've probably heard about some of the changes in the region. Half as much traffic, electricity consumption down by 8%, and the Pittsburgh International Airport seeing only a fraction of its typical travelers. All of that leads to a reduction in greenhouse gases — but for how long?

This story will help you understand where Pittsburgh stands on its goals to reduce energy use, what's going on with industrial pollution and what could happen to the petrochemical industry.
It all factors into the biggest question of all: How does the planet sustain the pandemic’s historic drops in global climate change emissions while communities are focused on staying safe and reviving the economy?
To find answers to some of these questions, please read my reporting. I hope you find it useful.
