The U.S. House of Representatives just passed a terrifying bill that would empower Donald Trump to strip the nonprofit status of any organization with the stroke of a pen — and believe it or not, 15 Democrats voted for it.

Under the bill, Trump’s Treasury Secretary could issue what amounts to a legal death penalty to any nonprofit organization that displeases him — including Inequality Media — by simply labeling the group “terrorist supporting.”

No due process. No meaningful appeals procedure. The bill doesn’t even require the administration to provide evidence or an explanation.

Here’s the good news: Since Inequality Media and others started sounding the alarm, most Democrats have come out against it — and that means we still have a realistic chance of blocking it in the U.S. Senate.

According to the bill’s supporters, this legislation is needed in order to stop nonprofit organizations in the U.S. from providing funds to terrorists. However, it’s already illegal to provide aid to terrorists, and after 9/11, Congress passed a flood of legislation to make it easier for law enforcement to prosecute alleged terrorist supporters.

What this bill does is empower Donald Trump — a man who ran on a pledge to take retribution against his political opponents — with the ability to crush any organization that dares criticize him. Congressman Lloyd Doggett, who led the opposition to the bill, describes it as creating a “death penalty” for nonprofits that oppose Trump, and he’s right.

In the days leading up to the election, Trump mused about putting Liz Cheney in front of a firing squad. He has promised to use the military to attack American citizens exercising their First Amendment rights. He’s talked about using the Justice Department to go after Democratic elected officials.

And since the election, Trump has begun staffing his administration with MAGA extremists like Pete Hegseth and Stephen Miller, who will gladly implement his most authoritarian impulses.

That’s why we need to ramp up our efforts to stop this awful bill, and our efforts are making a difference. When the House voted on this same bill last week under fast-track rules requiring a two-thirds majority to pass, 52 House Democrats voted for it. This time, we lost only 15.

Now we need to keep pushing to stop the bill in the Senate, because if this bill becomes law, every nonprofit organization in the country will be in danger of Trump’s wrath.
