I sent the below e-mail almost a year ago on July 3,
2019.
Today on May 15, 2020, I write to share that
the Khalid Jabara and Heather Heyer NO HATE
Act just passed the U.S. House of
Representatives as part of a larger COVID-19 relief
package.
I am so incredibly proud of the role our team at the Arab
American Institute played in identifying this gap in reporting and
seeking a remedy to address it. While action in the Senate is
uncertain, I wanted to share today’s victory with you because it is an
important milestone. Nothing can bring back Khalid or Heather, but
passage of Jabara-Heyer will ensure their stories live on in a way
that helps other victims of hate crimes.
We will be in touch again as soon as there are developments
in the Senate. Until then, thank you for your continued support and we
hope that you and your loved ones are all staying safe.
Best,
Maya
