Celebrating the Future of the New Democrat Coalition

Hello Friends,

I hope you are having a safe and wonderful weekend. As some of you know, I currently serve as Chair of the New Democrat Coalition, a group of pragmatic Democrats dedicated to breaking through partisan gridlock and delivering results. From lowering costs and expanding access to health care to investing in public safety and securing our borders, we are focused on tackling the issues that matter most to people. I couldn’t think of a better way to cap off my time in Congress than leading what I like to call the “Can Do Caucus!"

The New Democrat Coalition will be the largest and most influential it’s ever been in the 119th Congress.

This week, New Dems held our leadership elections for the 119th Congress, and I am excited to pass the torch to my friend and colleague, Chair-elect Congressman Brad Schneider, and our team of Vice Chairs—Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski, Congressman Marc Veasey, Congressman Josh Harder, and Congressman Salud Carbajal. Our Coalition is set to welcome at least 23 new members, growing our ranks to 108 members and counting next year!

I’m so proud of the work we have accomplished together, from passing the CHIPS and Science Act to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill and the Inflation Reduction Act. Our Coalition also played a critical role in raising the debt ceiling and preventing a devastating global economic meltdown, as well as providing the votes to prevent a costly government shutdown last year. As I prepare to retire at the end of this Congress, I look forward to seeing my New Dem colleagues build on and protect this progress in the 119th Congress.

It was great to see New Hampshire Senate Democratic Leader Rebecca Kwoka this week!

Also this week, I spoke at the NewDEAL’s 14th Annual Leadership Conference alongside New Hampshire Senate Democratic Leader Rebecca Kwoka about the Democratic Party's need to communicate our priorities more effectively and address the needs of families in New Hampshire and across the country.

This starts by examining what went right for Democrats this year—and the New Democrat Coalition and NewDEAL leaders’ success in defending and growing our ranks offers a valuable roadmap. It’s critical that we remain focused on addressing commonsense issues like lowering costs, investing in public safety, and growing the middle class—and I know that leaders like Senator Kwoka will be instrumental to Democrats’ long-term success.

Defending New Hampshire's Non-Profits

I have concerns that this bill would harm the non-profits Granite Staters rely on.

Non-profits in New Hampshire and across the country play a valuable role in supporting our communities, from helping individuals access substance use disorder treatment and recovery services to addressing homelessness and housing affordability, and so much more.

This week, the House voted on the Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act, legislation that empowers the Treasury Secretary to strip the non-profit status of tax-exempt organizations. I voted against this legislation over concerns that it could be politicized and used to threaten non-profits and their crucial work. I urge Republicans to work in a bipartisan way to fix this problem instead of playing games with the non-profits Granite Staters rely on.

Expanding Access to Broadband and Closing the Digital Divide

It was great to be recognized for my efforts in Congress to close the digital divide.

Access to reliable Internet is essential to fully participating in the 21st-century economy. From supporting education and workforce opportunities to accessing telehealth care, families and communities increasingly rely on the Internet.

This week, I was recognized with the ConNEctor Award by the New England Connectivity and Telecommunications Association (NECTA) for my work in Congress to expand access to affordable broadband. We also discussed how we can work together to close the digital divide and ensure families and businesses can get and stay connected, regardless of where they live.
