After failing to secure enough votes in 2019, more than 1,000 University of Pittsburgh graduate student workers voted in favor of unionizing with the United Steelworkers. The university said it would begin the good faith bargaining process with the students.

Also, when a Comfort Inn & Suites opened in 2021 on East Ohio Street, it encouraged nearby residents and business owners who hoped the corridor would transform into a restaurant row. This year, the hotel filed for bankruptcy. Depending on the results of an auction, the East Allegheny property could become housing for those with housing vouchers. The proposal has brought mixed feelings from community members.
