When we think of the holiday season we think of visiting friends and family, home-cooked meals, and giving thanks. But as we’re visiting our loved ones, there’s another thing we need to think about: unsecured firearms.
The weeks around Thanksgiving and winter holidays have the highest rates of unintentional shootings.
Think about it: When people spend more time in and around the home or at the homes of others and there is easy access to firearms, it follows that there is an increased likelihood of injury or death. These incidents are known as family fire, or shootings that result from someone misusing an unsecured firearm from the home. Each day in America, eight children or teens are unintentionally injured or killed due to family fire.
But we know the solutions to prevent these tragedies, and chief among them is safe firearm storage. Storing firearms securely can decrease the likelihood of family fire. Having conversations around safe and secure gun storage are absolutely essential to protect our loved ones.
This holiday season, these conversations are even more important. We know that approximately 7.5 million adults in America acquired their first firearm between 2019-2021 and only 54 percent of these new gun owners report that they store all firearms in the home locked and unloaded. With this surge of new gun owners, it’s critical to talk about ways to safely store firearms — and we’re here to help.

We are excited to announce that we just released our latest annual report, “Leading the Movement to End Gun Violence.” In it, we recap our major victories and successes — made possible thanks to supporters like you — and show how Brady's solutions are uniquely effective in the fight against gun violence.
We saw the largest drop in homicides in recent history. We launched new public education campaigns on secure gun storage and extreme risk laws, with inspiring results. And in state legislatures, we passed 73 Brady priority bills, with 48 becoming law. And these are just a few highlights.

Honoring the Victims of Club Q With Action |
Tuesday, November 19, marked two years since the deadly shooting at Club-Q, an LGBTQ+ bar in Colorado Springs, CO. Patrons entered Club Q as they did any other weekend, ready for a fun night out in a space designed to feel safe and affirming.
But instead of love, clubgoers were met with hatred and violence when a gunman killed five people and injured more than 20 others.
The tragedy at Club Q was a horrible reminder that hate is far more deadly when coupled with easy access to firearms. In fact, every year, over 10,000 people are victims of a hate crime involving a firearm. ENOUGH.
While we may not be able to change the hearts and minds of everyone, we can help stop those who have shown they are prone to hateful violence from gaining easy access to firearms.
In honor of the victims of Club Q, we are calling on Congress to pass the Disarm Hate Act which will prevent any person who has been convicted of a hate crime misdemeanor from purchasing a firearm. Will you please join us in urging Congress to disarm hate? |
