Hi John,

Two years ago today, we made history. As the polls closed and the returns started to come in, we conquered a major milestone in our shared quest to restore sanity and humanity to our government.

As a district, we shook off the vestiges of gerrymandering that had suppressed our votes for years. As Pennsylvanians, we made a commitment to have a woman represent the Commonwealth in Congress for the first time in years. And as a nation -- from the voters who turned out for a midterm primary, to the unprecedented number of candidates who ran for office -- we demonstrated that people were willing to put in the work necessary to reclaim our democracy and transform our country for the better.

I was thinking about the last two years as I went for a run this morning, and recalled the immortal words of the Grateful Dead: what a long, strange trip it’s been.

Tonight, I am writing to you from my office in DC as I await my turn to vote in the Capitol, which has been turned upside down by the coronavirus.

We have a lot of work left to do, but when I look back on all that we have accomplished in the last two years, it inspires me to press on through these difficult times. I continue to be inspired by my colleagues, who show up every day to work on behalf of the American people. I am inspired by the advocates and activists who press for equity in our nation and its diverse communities. I’m inspired by the young people who have engaged with our office and the electoral system to push for positive change. And I am inspired by you and your faith in me to navigate these troubled times on your behalf.

Thank you for joining me on this journey.

Wishing you safety, health, and strength,

Mary Gay
