Neighbors,
This Saturday, our very own Washington Spirit will be taking the field against the Orlando Pride in the National Women's Soccer League Championship at Canadian Pacific Kansas stadium! This marks the Spirit’s third championship appearance, and as a proud supporter of our local teams, I’m excited to cheer them on.
As your Councilmember, I’ve made it a priority to advocate for our sports teams and ensure they have the support they deserve. The Spirit have worked incredibly hard to get to this point, and now it’s time for all of us to stand behind them.
Let’s show the world just how strong the D.C. sports community is by rooting for the Washington Spirit this weekend. I’ll be cheering from here—join me in supporting our team as they make history!
In service,
Team McDuffie

Monday's CBED Markup
Committee on Business & Economic Development Holds Markup Hearing
"Electrical and Gas Utility Underground Work Wage Act of 2024"
On Monday, November 18th, my Committee on Business and Economic Development held a markup hearing that included the “Electrical and Gas Utility Underground Work Wage Act of 2024,” which will be discussed at next week’s Committee of the Whole meeting.
This bill proposes extending a prevailing wage (a higher minimum wage) to construction laborers working on qualifying underground projects in the District—specifically those led by contractors and subcontractors of gas and electric utility companies. The bill outlines two scenarios in which construction laborers performing work on gas and electric underground utilities will be eligible to receive this prevailing wage.
We worked closely with stakeholders and unions to ensure this bill supports workers and provides them with the wages they have earned and deserve.

Councilmember McDuffie Attends DowntownDC BID Holiday Market Kick-Off Celebration
Today, I had the pleasure of attending the DowntownDC BID and The Makers Show "Mingle & Jingle" Holiday Market Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the DowntownDC Holiday Market, a beloved tradition that brings our community together to celebrate the holiday season. It's exciting to see this vibrant event return, offering local artisans and businesses a platform to showcase their work while spreading holiday cheer throughout the District.
Team McDuffie Volunteers at Food & Friends
Yesterday, Team McDuffie volunteered at Food & Friends located at 219 Riggs Rd NE, Washington, DC. Together, we helped prepare and package numerous meals ahead of the holiday season. With Thanksgiving around the corner, the work felt even more rewarding. Food & Friends has made significant contributions in the fight against food insecurity in the District of Columbia, and we are incredibly grateful to them and all the fellow volunteers for their dedication and hard work.
Councilmember McDuffie Meets with Restaurant Leaders to Address Industry Challenges
On Tuesday, November 19th, I had the opportunity to meet with a group of restaurant leaders to discuss the unique challenges facing the industry and how my colleagues and I at the Council can provide support. The District’s restaurant industry stands out because the vast majority of restaurants are owned by small, local, independent operators. These small businesses play a crucial role in our city's economy, and we are committed to ensuring they have the resources and support needed to thrive.

I was deeply honored to receive an award from the DC Nightlife Council (DCNC) for my work in promoting and protecting Washington D.C.'s nightlife, restaurant, and hospitality industries. This recognition reflects the ongoing efforts to create a thriving, safe, and inclusive environment for our city's vibrant nightlife scene. I look forward to continuing to collaborate with local businesses, community members, and city officials to ensure the continued success and growth of these essential industries.
MPD 5D Public Safety Walk
Public Safety Walk in Ward 5
This week, Team McDuffie joined MPD 5D Commander Rooney and his officers on a public safety walk around the 1800 block of Evarts St NE in Ward 5. Each week, MPD conducts these safety walks with community leaders across the wards to meet with residents and business owners, while showing a visible presence in the community.
As a reminder, the District offers a camera rebate program, which has been very effective in helping reduce crime. To learn more, visit:

Minnesota Avenue Outreach
Community Outreach on Minnesota Ave NE
This past Tuesday, November 19th, Team McDuffie participated in a multi-agency community outreach with ANC Commissioner Ashley Ruff along Minnesota Ave NE, helping to connect residents with valuable resources.
We plan to partner with several agencies, including DHS/Community Connections, DBH, DC Prevention Center, OTA, DOES, FEMS, MPD, and OAG, as well as community-based organizations such as Marshall Heights Community Development Organization (MHCDO) and the Church of Scientology's Drug-Free World. These partnerships will help bring resources directly into the community every Tuesday from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM for the next few months.
