John,
This tragedy is all too familiar, but it never gets easier.
Brandon Durham, a Black husband and father, was facing a life-or-death situation when intruders broke into his home late Tuesday night. He did what we are forced to do with a fundamentally flawed public safety system as our only choice: he called 911 to report the break-in so he could protect himself and his 15-year-old daughter.
Minutes later he was fighting for their lives against a masked intruder.
When the Las Vegas police arrived, they saw Brandon in his underwear, pleading for help. They already received descriptions of the intruders.
They decided to shoot Brandon six times. Six times.
This isn’t about one officer’s actions; it’s about a system that treats Black people as threats, a system that sees our cries for help as a justification for violence, and a power trip.
Now, Brandon’s daughter Isabella is left without a father. Not due to the armed intruders, no. But due to the police who have proven time and again they are not here to protect us in any situation.
We are done burying our loved ones. We demand immediate accountability for the officers involved in Brandon Durham’s unnecessary killing. He deserved protection, not bullets. We won’t stop until Black lives are truly protected.
Donate to Bradon’s family if you’re able to. As a community, we will do everything we can to protect one another.
Rest in power, Brandon.
In solidarity,
Black Lives Matter
P.S. If you’re in Las Vegas please join the community for a march and rally this upcoming Saturday.
Our grassroots movement is pushing for Black liberation every single day. We are striving to create a world where Black people do so much more than just survive. It’s time we thrive.
As an organization one of our biggest hurdles is consistency.
A recurring contribution of anything you can afford goes a long way as we plan for the months, years, and even decades ahead. This is the most effective way for small-dollar donors (like you) to power our Black liberation work.
Will you make a recurring contribution of $5 or more today so that we can keep building momentum for our movement?
