The truth is there is no “offseason” in our line of work. There is no time off in defending our freedoms.
So as we continue to analyze this year’s election results, we’re getting ready for some of our first opportunities to fight back for our democracy in 2025.
Here’s what’s on the docket:
| 🗓️ JANUARY 🗓️ |
- Virginia will hold a special election that will decide control of the state senate AND the house of delegates. Currently, Democrats hold 21 seats and Republicans have 19 seats. If the GOP flips this seat, the Republican lieutenant governor would be the tie-breaking vote, giving them the majority. If Democrats win both seats, we will be able to fend off a Republican trifecta.
- Michigan will hold a special election that will set the balance of power in the state senate, as Democrats currently hold 20 seats and Republicans with 18 seats. If the GOP is able to turn this seat red, it would leave Democratic Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist as the tie-breaking vote.

| 🗓️ APRIL 🗓️ |
- Wisconsin will hold an election for a 10-year term on the state supreme court. While justices are elected as nonpartisan, the current breakdown of the court has four liberals and three conservatives. If conservatives are able to win this election, they will flip control of the court.

| 🗓️ NOVEMBER 🗓️ |
- Virginia and New Jersey will hold statewide elections for governor, lieutenant governor, and the house of delegates.
- Pennsylvania will hold an election for three state supreme court seats. Currently, Democrats have a 5-2 partisan advantage on the court. But because three Democrats are up for reelection, losing just two of these elections will flip the makeup of the court.

And sometime in 2025, Ohio will start the process of redrawing its congressional map. The new map will need to be completed by early 2026.
