Apprenticeship Week

This week [ [link removed] ] marks the 10th anniversary of National Apprenticeship Week [ [link removed] ], and Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, Lt. Governor Jon Husted, Ohio Department of Commerce Director Sherry Maxfield, Ohio Department of Job and Family Services Director Matt Damschroder, and Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities Director Kevin L. Miller are joining together in encouraging individuals seeking career opportunities to consider an apprenticeship.

“One of the ingredients of our economic success, innovation, and growth in Ohio is our range of quality apprenticeship programs,” said Governor DeWine. “Apprenticeships provide a clear pathway to a great-paying, lifelong career. Ohioans who take on an apprenticeship earn money while they learn a new skill, they avoid student loan debt, and – when they complete their programs – they can even receive a nationally recognized credential.”

“Pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship programs are incredibly valuable because they offer an earn-while-you-learn model that benefits both employers and employees,” said Lt. Governor Husted. “Without the high cost of college, participants gain hands-on skills, real-world experience, and a paycheck instead of a tuition bill. It’s a winning solution that builds a skilled workforce without the burden of debt.”

2024 H2Ohio EPA Round 6 Grants [ [link removed] ]

Governor DeWine and Ohio EPA Director Anne M. Vogel announced [ [link removed] ] $16.7 million in H2Ohio funding for 13 water infrastructure projects across the state. This is the sixth round of H2Ohio funding awarded to municipalities by Ohio EPA to improve water infrastructure and increase access to safe drinking water.

“H2Ohio is making a real difference with the significant investments we are putting into reliable, clean drinking water,” said Governor DeWine. “The projects being awarded today will have a huge positive impact on hundreds of Ohioans, and that's what H2Ohio is all about.”

Corrections and Law Enforcement Security Threat Group Conference [ [link removed] ]

Lt. Governor Husted spoke to public safety personnel at the Corrections and Law Enforcement Security Threat Group Conference where he shared the reasons why keeping law and order is so important for Ohio and the nation.

Governor DeWine, Lt. Governor Husted, and Ohio Department of Development Director Lydia Mihalik  announced [ [link removed] ] $58.2 million in state support to help clean up and redevelop 61 hazardous brownfield sites in 33 counties.

The Ohio Department of Development is awarding the funding through the Ohio Brownfield Remediation Program [ [link removed] ], which was created by the DeWine-Husted Administration in 2021. This announcement includes approximately $55.9 million for 46 cleanup/remediation projects and nearly $2.4 million for 15 assessment projects.

In honor of the life and service of city of Napoleon Patrolman Tyler Murrey, Governor DeWine ordered [ [link removed] ] the flags of the United States and the state of Ohio to be lowered upon all public buildings and grounds throughout Henry county, the Ohio Statehouse, the Vern Riffe Center, and the Rhodes State Office Tower until sunset on the day of his funeral, Friday, November 22, 2024.

As part of his commitment to ensuring all Ohio children have the opportunity to build strong foundations for success, Governor DeWine and Ohio Department of Children and Youth (DCY) Director Kara B. Wente announced [ [link removed] ] the availability of $5 million in grant funding. The funds will be used to support training for teachers at early care and education programs on to instruct them in ways to harness the Science of Reading to enrich their young students’ literacy skills from an early age.

“Decades of research shows us that this method is the best way for young brains to  learn how to read, and we know that the earlier a child can read well, the more success they will have in school and throughout life,” said Governor DeWine. “By providing Science of Reading training for those who teach and care for our young children, we will be empowering these educators to lay the groundwork for more of our kids to reach their full potential.”

Governor's Executive Workforce meeting [ [link removed] ]

Lt. Governor Husted convened the Governor’s Executive Workforce Board for a meeting at the Educational Service Center of Central Ohio in Columbus. During the meeting, he updated board members on the Ohio AI in Education Strategy [ [link removed] ], released by InnovateOhio to ensure Ohio's education system is prepared for and can help lead in the AI revolution.

Lt. Governor Husted hosted a roundtable during National Adoption Month with families in Dayton who have adopted or who are going through the adoption process.

Lt. Governor Husted began his life in a foster home before being adopted by his parents, Jim and Judy Husted.

Under the leadership of Governor DeWine, Ohio continues to take bold steps to ensure all people facing mental health challenges are able to access care in the best setting for their needs.

Governor DeWine and Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services Director LeeAnne Cornyn released [ [link removed] ] the final recommendations of the Governor’s Work Group on Competency Restoration and Diversion. The recommendations aim to free up more beds in the state’s psychiatric hospitals, while also expanding local options for mental health treatment and support across Ohio.

“At the heart of these recommendations is our desire to help all Ohioans in need of mental health supports access the right care, in the right place, at the right time,” said Governor DeWine. “The work group’s comprehensive recommendations give us a unique chance to improve our delivery of mental health services and streamline recovery timelines for everyone from individuals involved in the criminal justice system who have been ordered to our state psychiatric hospitals, to Ohio families whose loved ones are facing a mental health crisis and are in urgent need of treatment.”

Lt. Governor Husted spoke at the Blue Line Foundation groundbreaking ceremony for its new, 24,000-square-foot headquarters in Cincinnati's South Fairmount neighborhood. As one of three campuses nationwide, the center will feature regionally coordinated programming to support officer wellness and mental health initiatives, improving the preparedness of area law enforcement agencies.

Rescue Kitchen ribbon cutting [ [link removed] ]

Ohio First Lady Fran DeWine and Lt. Governor Husted spoke at a kick-off ceremony for Rescue Kitchen in Nelsonville, an accelerator program started by La Soupe. Rescue Kitchen will prepare food and distribute it to those with food insecurity in coordination with school superintendents of districts in Athens and Meigs counties.

In honor of the life and service of State Senator Schuring, Governor DeWine ordered [ [link removed] ] the flags of the United States and the state of Ohio to be lowered upon all public buildings and grounds throughout Stark County and at the Ohio Statehouse, the Vern Riffe Center, and the Rhodes State Office Tower today, and to remain until sunset on the day of his funeral. 

All other public buildings and grounds throughout the state may fly the flags of the United States and the state of Ohio at half-staff at their discretion for the same time period.

“Fran and I are saddened to learn of the death of State Senator Kirk Schuring. Kirk was a model legislator. Not only was he a fierce advocate for his constituents in Canton and Stark County, but he also was a legislator who did the hard work every day in committee and on the floor to get meaningful legislation passed. His legislative accomplishments were broad based, encompassing economic development, helping small businesses prosper, enhancing school safety, and promoting public safety, especially helping victims of crime. Fran and I extend our sincerest condolences to Kirk’s wife, Darlene; his children; and his entire family.”
