Dear John,
Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to pass H.R. 9495 – Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act – this week. The legislation now moves to the Senate for passage.
As we shared with you earlier this week, if H.R. 9495 passes the Senate and is signed into law, it could have far-reaching effects for organizations like Gamaliel, its affiliates, and partner organizations and result in the loss of their not-for-profit status simply by exercising their rights to free speech.
There are two important actions you can take right now:
- Take a look at the how your Representative voted here. Let your Rep know how you feel about the vote they cast. (Don’t forget that thanks are important, too, when our representatives vote our values!)
-
Then contact your Senators, and urge them to vote against the House bill when it comes to the Senate floor. (We will keep you informed of the Senate bill number.)
It is critical that we take action. Call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and follow the prompts to speak with your Member of Congress. Remember . . . elections have consequences, but so do our failures to act between elections. Make that call to your Member today! In solidarity, Cynthia Jarrold
