Being a
good steward of our democracy isn’t always easy. There is a lot of work,
so much noise, and on occasion, tough losses.

To pick yourself back up, it helps to focus on the why.

Over the past six years, I’ve had a number of frustrations with
Washington. I’m tired of the inaction on issues like bringing down housing
costs, protecting abortion rights, and preventing gun violence. And, I’m
often just tired from having to wake up at 5:30am to fly across the
country to vote on a bill that almost always passes with unanimous support
because Congress, especially its schedule, wasn’t designed for someone
like me.

Some days, I’ve felt like the best I can do is get out of bed and put one
foot in front of the other.

I know I have to keep going—and I do—because it’s part of how I do my part
to build a better future for my kids.

As a mom, I worry for my children. I worry about whether they’ll be able
to afford to live in California when they grow up. I worry about whether
the climate crisis will make our state unlivable. I worry about what would
happen if my daughter needs an abortion and can’t get one.

But, I can’t just worry; I’ve got to take action.

Our democracy and our kids are counting on us to keep showing up—and not
just once every four years or two years. They need us to put one foot in
front of the other and to continue marching toward progress, despite the
setbacks and heartbreak along the way.

A better future is possible—if we work for it.

Look, I know it’s demoralizing when Donald Trump announces he’s nominating
yet another unqualified sycophant for his cabinet. And, the prospect of a
Republican trifecta in Washington and the harm they can do is scary.

I also know this. We are tough enough, and we aren’t going down without a
fight.

Thanks for being in this movement,

Katie
