WHY WE NEED A SELECT COMMITTEE ON THE CARTELS
|
|
Last Congress, Republicans in the House created a select committee to address threats posed by the Chinese Communist Party led by former Representative Mike Gallagher. The select committee accomplished a few things - it showed that the United States was serious about confronting this threat, offered a venue for bipartisan attention toward the CCP outside of the usual partisan committee structure, and streamlined legislative action.
The select committee on China was incredibly successful and we should mirror its structure for other priorities next Congress. First and foremost on the priority list must be combatting the Mexican Drug Cartels.
Here’s why Speaker Johnson should create a select committee to combat the Mexican drug cartels:
- The cartels are the greatest near-term threat. Full stop. President Trump agrees, as does his Border Czar Tom Homan.
- I lead the House Cartel Task Force. We have solutions. But we don’t have any authority. A select committee will have a better chance of moving these bills to the House floor and to a president who will sign them.
- The select committee would show that House Republicans are aligned with and committed to President Trump’s agenda to destroy the cartels.
Let’s get it done.

MEXICO CAN BE A PARTNER IN COMBATING THE CARTELS
|
|
I recently joined a policy discussion with Axios focused on the Future of Defense, where I specifically focused on the policy solutions a select committee on the drug cartels might pass into law. But we cannot ignore a critical component of this fight: having a good partner in Mexico.
It's time for a reality check on Mexico's disastrous "hugs, not bullets" approach to dealing with cartels. For the past six years, that soft-handed policy was nothing short of an open invitation for cartels to expand their operations unchecked. What did Mexico get in return? Record-high violence, brazen cartel activity, and a deteriorating security situation.
Now, with President Claudia Sheinbaum leading the way, there’s been a shift in strategy. She’s shown a willingness to utilize intelligence gathering, deploy troops, and coordinate efforts between federal and state forces, all while continuing efforts to keep young people away from organized crime. It’s a promising start that deserves a strong backing.
That’s where we can make a difference. By ensuring the Mexican military has the resources they need—like close air support and tactical assistance—we can strengthen their efforts to push back against these violent networks.
Because let’s be clear: these criminal organizations don’t only threaten Mexico. They’re flooding our streets with drugs, fueling the opioid crisis, and endangering families on both sides of the border. We need to confront this threat together.

PRESIDENT TRUMP'S NEW LEVERAGE OVER PUTIN
|
|
Joe Biden made a remarkable shift in his policy toward Ukraine recently, allowing Ukraine to strike military targets inside of Russia using American-made ATACM missiles. It is a long overdue move by Biden to actually free Ukraine to take the fight to Russia, and it should be welcomed by the incoming Trump Administration.
While there has been predictable outrage over this move, it actually gives President Trump significant leverage over Vladimir Putin. Instead of inheriting a costly and politically charged stalemate, he will inherit the leverage he needs to start out his presidency with a strong hand to play against Putin. By January 20, 2025, the Kremlin will have finally felt some of the pain it has wrought on Ukraine, sanctions will have been ramped up on Russia’s oil and gas sector, and that regime’s ability to supply troops and continue this costly war will have diminished. The Russians will finally be thinking about off-ramps. And then a new American president with a history of dealmaking steps onto the scene with an offer to start negotiating a peace deal. As a Trump supporter, I can’t imagine a better fortune for our 47th president.
For those on the left and right who have fear mongered about WWIII caused by President Trump and Joe Biden respectively, the mongers have been proven wrong time and time again. This is especially true of President Trump, who is not the “isolationist” some want or believe him to be. President Trump killed Iranian General Qasem Soleimani while the left cried wolf about WWIII. Escalation never materialized. President Trump promised Vladimir Putin he would bomb Moscow if Russia invaded Ukraine. Russia never invaded Ukraine under President Trump.
In President Trump’s second term, America will finally re-establish peace through strength around the world. The ability for Ukraine to strike military targets inside of Russia is the kind of American strength that just may give President Trump the leverage he needs to establish peace once again in Europe.
