Dear John,

After the massacre in El Paso, many of us are asking one basic question. What can I do to help prevent the next hate-inspired tragedy?

I have a suggestion.

Join the Muslim-Jewish Advisory Council—convened by AJC and Islamic Society of North America—in its groundbreaking advocacy on this important issue:

While attacks like the one in El Paso receive widespread public attention, most hate crimes unfortunately never even make it into the FBI’s annual hate crime report. Over 90 cities with populations of over 100,000 report zero incidents or do not report at all, including Miami, Newark, Indianapolis, Birmingham, Las Vegas, and Allen, Texas where the El Paso shooter came from. Even some well-known cases, like the 2017 murder of Heather Heyer in Charlottesville, are prosecuted as hate crimes, but are never recorded in official FBI hate crime data.

Without an accurate picture of the problem, the federal government cannot respond effectively or work to prevent future horrific attacks like those in Charleston, Pittsburgh, Poway, and El Paso.
