John,
This week, as anti-transgender rhetoric and violence is increasing across
the nation, I led a group of House Democrats in introducing a resolution
commemorating the Transgender Day of Remembrance.
Our position is clear: Too many transgender people have been killed just
for living as their true, authentic selves. These violent acts, and
countless other acts of discrimination, are terrifying — but we won’t
waver.
We will never back down from fighting to ensure that all trans people can
exist freely without fear of hate. Any attempts to attack this community
are simply a distraction from the real work at hand to lift up and ensure
opportunity for all Americans.
Yet, far too many people are suggesting the Democratic Party should turn
its back on our trans friends, family members, and neighbors.
That’s why I was so proud that almost 100 of my colleagues co-sponsored my
resolution, which is 50% more than last year. They recognize we all must
continue to stand up and protect our trans community.
I’m especially proud that six Democrats in Congress – in some of the
toughest swing district seats in the country – stepped up to cosponsor the
resolution: Angie Craig, Sharice Davids, Chris Pappas, Chris DeLuzio,
Andrea Salinas and Eric Sorensen.
They are pushing back with the rest of us. Rather than turning their back
on some of their most vulnerable constituents, these Democrats have made
the right choice and made it clear that they will stand up in the face of
hatred, violence, and discrimination.
We need a lot more of that in the Democratic Party if we’re going to build
the kind of mass grassroots movement that we’ll need to win lasting
majorities. So it’s really important that we immediately support fellow
Democrats who stand up for what’s right.
