New Poll Shows Overwhelming Public Support for a Strong EPA & Environmental Justice
Even 76 Percent of Trump Voters Support Increasing Funding to Environmental Justice Communities

Our friends at the Environmental Protection Network released the results of a post-election poll commissioned to better understand voters’ views on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In addition to finding overwhelming public support for the EPA across all demographics, including Trump voters, the poll also found strong support for increasing funding to environmental justice communities – with all voters (80 percent) as well as Trump voters (72 percent) favoring it.

Other highlights include bipartisan support for increasing EPA funding (88 percent of all voters and 81 percent of Trump voters support) as well as bipartisan opposition to attempts to weaken the agency (86 percent of all voters and 76 percent of Trump voters oppose). A majority of respondents were also concerned that president-elect Trump would appoint an EPA Administrator who would “put the interests of polluting corporations ahead of protecting clean water, clean air, and public health” and supported an appointment of someone who would “focus on implementing environmental protections” rather than “repealing regulations and cutting EPA’s staff and budgets.” Download the Poll Results (PDF)

Come to our workshop with Con Edison and the Public Utility Law Project of New York on Thursday, Dec. 12th from 6:00 - 8:00 PM in Room MLK 411 at the Riverside Church, which is located at 490 Riverside Drive (between West 120th & 122nd Streets). Bring a copy of your utility bill and a Benefit Awards Letter from the past 12 months (an approval letter for public assistance programs such as SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, etc.), and we will help you apply for eligible programs to lower your bill. Valentina Rojas was quoted in a New York Amsterdam News article on the wildfires in and around our city, noting that communities of color face the greatest danger from the smoke due to their disproportionate exposure to other sources of air pollution.

CityMeetingsNYC featured Lonnie Portis’ testimony at the New York City Council’s Committee on Sanitation and Solid Waste Management hearing on waste containerization. In his testimony, Lonnie expressed concern about organics being sent to landfills and incinerators, emphasized the need for a waste system grounded in environmental and climate justice, and voiced support for Intro 498 (requiring DSNY to collect waste from community gardens) and Intro 698 (clarifying organic waste drop-off sites).

The Columbia News Service story we reported on last week, which quoted Lonnie Portis on the slow progress being made on electric school buses in New York City, was picked up by the Associated Press, Newsday, WKTV News, and other outlets.

Peggy Shepard, who spoke at the Yale School of the Environment’s Global Environmental Justice Conference, was featured in the recap of the summit, talking about the importance of collaboration in resisting anticipated efforts to undermine environmental and climate justice under the new administration.
