Friend, “Kids need to live their life as kids.” So why are social media companies allowing them to be constantly exposed to online harms? This question was asked by one of the parents we interviewed in Washington, DC, and it was echoed by other parents who shared their stories with us in London and by email. Regardless of where they are, parents told us they have an endless list of worries when it comes to their kids being online: What if they encounter dangerous body image content? What if a stranger sends their kids a message? How are never-ending timelines affecting their mental health? What is the impact of waves of misinformation on their kids’ perception of the word?
